Copyfitting text: Numbered placeholder text
Copyfit text, or "copyfitting text", is used as a placeholder for real text, eg. when designing web page layouts or doing Desk Top Publishing (DTP). It is also known as eg. "placeholder text", "text fitting text", or "dummy text".This page has two copyfitting texts - one for shorter layouts, and one for those with text blocks that are a little longer. The first is numbered with ordinary (Latin) numbers for every fifth character, the second is numbered with Roman numerals for every 50 character.
- Placeholder text: 1,500 characters numbered in blocks of five
- Placeholder text: 2,000 characters with Roman numerals for every 50
- Similar types of text, eg. "Lorem Ipsum"
- License, Use and Copyright
Text one: 1,500 characters numbered in blocks of five
The text below has 1,500 characters including the final dot. It is arranged in blocks of five and every fifth character is numbered.- From zero to 100 every 25 is coloured,
- from 100 to 500 every 50 is coloured, and
- from 500 to 1,500 every 100 is coloured.
To select, eg. 500 characters, mark the text from the beginning to "500" including the digit "5" from the number "500". If the whole number does not fit a block of five, one digit is replaced by a space.
Text two: 2,000 characters with Roman numerals for every 50
The text below uses Roman numerals as length indicator. These are the coloured upper case letters in the text. One Roman numeral is placed for every 50 characters.
Roman Numerals
L equals 50
C equals 100
D equals 500
M equals 1,000
Using the placeholder text
Unlike the text above, the text below does not try to keep blocks of five. Note that character number 150 and 300 is a space character - in these cases the space caracter is replaced by the appropriate Roman numeral. This means that some blocks are 11 characters in stead of 5.Working with the text this doesn't really cause problems, as, once the text is in place, you just replace the numeral with a space to get an even text flow.
The first L is character number 50, the first C is character number 100, the second L is character number 150 and so on.
Similar types of text
A similar type text is the "greek" text or "Lorem Ipsum" named after the first two words of that particular text. That variant is often used, although it is not very good (probably because it is included as a sample in certain software packages). The main problem with "Lorem Ipsum" is that it has no way of easily determining the number of characters in a given text block or phrase.Copyfitting text solves that problem and provides easy and accurate measurement of text lenght.
Still, if you wish to try it out, here's the Standard Lorem Ipsum placeholder text.
